The Shrieking Shack update

Lots of progress cladding the exterior this weekend, got more windows hung. Still more shingles to add at the top of the one side, but have to buy a vent first. Once that’s done, then I can start the window and door trim.

And there’s still two other sides that need clapboard and shingles. I’ll not get to the back before Garden Walk next weekend. And the roof needs (minimally) tar paper as soon as possible. Then comes the roofing materials.

Through the Fall and Spring it will get window boxes, an arbor along the driveway side, and diamond-shaped slate tiles along the bottom. There will also be an outside potting table underneath the window beside the door. Then there’s the interior.

The inspiration.

All the windows came from our attic. When I was bringing down the round-topped window, it occurred to me that the window has probably been in the attic for 118 years – and I better not break it now.

The door was in the garage when we moved in 14 years ago. I talked to the person that lived in the house in the 1960s this weekend. She took the door out and stored it in the garage after some interior renovations. I thanked her.

It’s coming together very quickly mostly because my groundskeeper has been priming and pre-painting the clapboards and shingles. Even earlier in the week when it rained, she was painting in the basement for hour upon hour. We’ll only have to do some touch-up painting when it’s put together.

Even still, for Garden Walk this coming weekend it will be more of a “stage set” in that it will look good from (this) one angle for photos.

The Harry Potter garden may not get put in by Garden Walk Buffalo. Our house number is 215, but we’ll make this 215 and 3/4. And we may dub it the Shrieking Shack. Muggles wouldn’t understand.

I have a long-time garden blog, a popular garden on America's largest garden tour, and have co-written a book on garden design titled, "Buffalo-Style Gardens: Create a Quirky, One-of-a-Kind Private Garden with Eye-Catching Designs" When I'm not doing all that, I am an advertising designer always out looking to design things to promote your business. Look me up at #jcharlier.
